Trazodone HCL (tray'zoe-done)
is used in the treatment of
depression. It may also be used for relief of an anxiety disorder and chronic pain
and can be prescribed for alcohol dependence, drug induced dyskinesias and insomnia.
This generic prescription is equivalent to Desyrel brand drug. It's available in 50
100 150 milligram tablets.
This drug is a tetracyclic antidepressant. It increases the activity of one of the brain chemicals (serotonin), which helps elevate mood.
The drug will increase total sleep time, decrease the number and
duration awakenings, and decrease REM sleep.

Common Side Effects - Include: blurred vision, constipation, decreased appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, general body discomfort, headache, light-headedness, muscle aches/pains, nausea, nervousness, sleeplessness, stomach pain, stuffy nose, swelling of the skin, tiredness, and tremors.
Drug Interaction Concerns: There are certain drugs that cause negative side effects when taken with
this prescription med. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
(1) Carbamazepine, ethanol, ginkgo biloba, HIV protease inhibitors, phenothiazines, or serotonin reuptake inhibitors because side effects, such as increased drowsiness or blurred vision, may occur.
(2) Buspirone, Carbamazepine, Digoxin, Hydantoins, Itraconazole,
Ketoconazole, Nefazodone, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or sodium oxybate because the risk of their side effects may be increased byby this prescription.
(3) Anticoagulants because they may decrease medication's effectiveness. Your doctor may want to adjust your dose while taking
this prescription.
Important Notes: (1) This
drug may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use
this medicine with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
(2) Children and teenagers who take
anti-depression pills may be at increased risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. Adults may also be affected. The risk may be greater in patients who have had suicidal thoughts or actions in the past. The risk may also be greater in patients who have had bipolar
illness. Contact your physician at once if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood; anxious, restless, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur.
(3) Tell your doctor or dentist that you take this antidepressant before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
(4) The drug may rarely cause a prolonged, painful erection. This could happen even when you are not having sex. If this is not treated right away, it could lead to permanent sexual problems, such as impotence. Contact your doctor right away if this happens.
(5) Do not breast
feed while taking this drug without
consulting with your doctor.
