Verapamil Hydrochloride (ver-ap'a-mil)
is used in the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia, a rhythm disturbance of the heart. It is also used for controlling heart rate response to other rhythm disturbances, specifically
arterial fibrillation and arterial
flutter. It can also be prescribed for migraine headaches and in the
treatment of manic depression.
Verapamil HCL is a calcium channel blocker. It works by slowing the electrical conduction in the heart, slowing heart rate, and/or normalizing heart rhythm.The drug

brand drugs: Calan, Calan SR, Isoptin, Isoptin SR, Verelan &
Verelan PM. This medication is available in 120 mg, 180 mg, 240 mg and 360 mg extended
release capules.

Common Side Effects - Dizziness, fatigue,
elevated liver enzymes, headache, nausea and lightheadedness.
Important Medicine Notes: (1) Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (i.e. sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Verapamil
HCI; it may add to their effects.
(2) This drug may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting with: alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
(3) Decrease the intake of caffeine beverages. (4) Notify your doctor if
you easily bruise or have unexplained bleeding while on this drug. (5)
Do not use over the counter medicines, especially aspirin without
discussing with your doctor. (6) Do not breast
feed while taking this drug without
consulting with your doctor.
